Visiting the beautiful Santanyi Market in Mallorca

Nestled in the southeast of Mallorca, discover the charming village of Santanyi, with its gold sandstone houses and painted shutters. Although known for its beautiful buildings, quiet streets, and fantastic restaurants, it’s most famous for its twice-weekly market — an explosion of color, flavor, and local life! Visiting the Santanyi Mallorca Market was one of the absolute highlights of our Mallorca itinerary; find out everything you need to know, including where to eat and how to get there, with our complete travel guide.

Santanyi Mallorca Market

The charming inland village of Santanyi is situated on the stunning island of Mallorca, just off the coast of mainland Spain.

On Wednesday and Saturday (between 9 AM & 2 PM), the quiet streets suddenly come to life with its famous market, hosting hundreds of vendors. Each stall sells unique wares, such as fresh food, clothing, or handicrafts. It’s a colorful and vibrant experience — perfect for purchasing souvenirs from your trip!

While the market is popular with tourists, you’ll still see local people doing their shopping, armed with their traditional Mallorcan wicker basket, stuffed to the brim with newly bought fresh veggies.

One of our favorite things was to set up at a coffee shop overlooking the market and people-watch. The vendors all know each other, so they will chat and sing as they set up the stalls for the day. Everyone’s in a great mood!

Our Top Tips for Santanyi Market, Mallorca

  • Sample Mallorcan Delicacies: We recommend purchasing traditional treats at Santanyi Mallorca Market. For example, a nutty aged Mallorcan cheese or a sugar-coated ensaimada (typical Mallorcan pastry). For the meat eaters, sample some sobrasada; we’re told this is a bit like a delicious chorizo paste!
  • Bring cash: Make sure to bring change with you, just in case, as some vendors won’t accept cards.
  • Practice your Spanish: Not all vendors will speak English, so it’s a good idea to have some essential phrases to communicate. It’s also a great way to connect with locals!
  • Pack a hat and sunscreen: On a hot summer’s day, you won’t find much shade on the market streets of Santanyi, so it’s a good idea to protect/cover your skin.
  • Be respectful: Remember, this is people’s home, so always be respectful of local people. For example, if you want to take photos of the stalls or vendors, it’s a good idea to ask first.

Parking at Santanyi

Please note that we recommend arriving way before 11 AM to ensure you find a parking space. But where can you park when visiting Santanyi Market? Well, there are multiple areas where this parking and this one are the largest. When we visited, we arrived just before 9 AM and had plenty of choice. The downside is that the market hasn’t started yet. However, it’s the perfect excuse to grab a coffee and an Ensaimada and watch vendors get ready for the day.

Did you know? The streets are mainly pedestrian inside the town of Santanyi, making it extra tranquil for visitors.

As such, you’ll find all the parking areas around the outskirts of the town, which are free to use. You can find all the locations on our Google Maps.

Other Things to See in Santanyi

Although Santanyi Mallorca Market is the real highlight, there are many other fantastic things to see in the village, from boutique clothing stores to art galleries and ceramic shops.

Terra Ceramica / Terra Origens

Make sure also to visit the incredible interior shop Terra Ceramica, which is jam-packed with unique interior decoration, stoneware, and textiles. You’ll be spoilt for choice with things you’d like to take home. We spent so much time in this shop; we’re always looking for new homeware to add to our house in the Netherlands!

Tip: Hungry after your morning of shopping? There is also an adjoining restaurant called Terra Origens, which looks fantastic. Although we didn’t eat here ourselves, we had a look through the gateway into the open courtyard, which was filled with tables decorated with beautiful ceramics. The food looks healthy and delicious! Although, we have heard that wait times can be long on market days.

Local Beaches

Although Santanyi Mallorca Market is located inland, it’s not far away from the beautiful southeastern beaches of Mallorca, most of which are soft sand coves with turquoise water.

The village is also perched right on the edge of the stunning nature of Mondrago Natural Park. This stretch of coastline feels remote and untouched compared to many of the island’s busier resort beaches.

Grab some delicious local food from the market and make your very own picnic to take with you after you’ve finished shopping. It’s the perfect afternoon of relaxation after a bustling morning wandering the streets of Santanyi!

Some of our nearby favorites are:

Aerial view of Cala del Moro, Mallorca, Spain: a turquoise cove surrounded by rocky cliffs and dense green trees, with people swimming and sunbathing on the beach.

Tip: Another great thing to do after your visit to Santanyi is to rent a boat for the afternoon. We hired a traditional llaut boat and guide to explore the beautiful white sand and shallow turquoise waters of the southern coastline. Our guide was fantastic, taking us to some of the island’s most private spots (drinks and snorkels were also provided).

A small white boat is anchored near a sandy shore with trees, while several people swim in the clear blue water around it—one of the relaxing things to do in Mallorca.

Where to Stay in Santanyi

Although known mainly as a day trip, Santanyi is also a great place to stay while on your Mallorca itinerary. It’s a pretty town with many bars, restaurants, art galleries, and boutiques. Plus, you’ll be right in the thick of the action for the Santanyi Market! Choose from charming fincas, upmarket retreats, or budget-friendly guesthouses — there’s something for every kind of traveler. Here are some of our favorites:

where to stay Santanyi Mallorca Market

Santanyi Mallorca Market is conveniently located close to many top things to do in Mallorca, like Cala Figuera (see all hotels here). This is a particularly convenient place to stay, as it’s just a short drive from Santanyi.

Alternatively, the capital city of Palma is ideal if you’re looking for more entertainment. Plus, it’s only a 45-minute drive away. (See all hotels in Palma)

How to Get to Santanyi Market

Santanyi is not the easiest to visit by public transport, so we recommend hiring a car if you plan to visit the market on your trip. While there are buses that bring you to Santanyi from other places on the island, they may be long and have various connections.

A Mediterranean-style villa with stone walls, surrounded by manicured gardens and palm trees, sits under a bright blue sky with scattered clouds—perfect for a restaurant Santanyi Mallorca experience.

Palma to Santanyi

Santanyi Mallorca market is a 45-minute drive from Palma by car, so it’s convenient to visit on a Mallorca itinerary.

You can also take the 501 bus from the Estacion Intermodal in Palma all the way to Campos (see the full timetable). From here, you’ll need to change to the 515 bus to Santanyi (timetable here). Be aware that this journey can take up to 2 hours, so it’s not ideal if you want to make the most of the morning.

Otherwise, if you’re not planning on hiring a car, your best option is to join an organized tour. This is a great way to visit Santanyi and learn more about Mallorcan culture and produce. Please note that tours generally arrive after 9 AM, so while you won’t have to worry about parking, the market will be noticeably busier.

How Much Does Santanyi Cost?

As Santanyi is inland, it is slightly less busy than other coastal destinations on the island. This makes it easier to reserve accommodation (although it’s not necessarily cheaper) during the more expensive summer months.

The market itself, however, isn’t the cheapest on the island. As it’s become famous, some local price tags have been replaced by more ‘touristy’ prices. However, you can still find some bargains if you look in the right places.

Costs of Traveling in Santanyi

Travel on a budget in Santanyi, from $510 − $570 USD weekly per person, mid-range $1530 − $2810 USD, and high-end from $2840 − $4190 USD. However, costs depend on factors like accommodation, transportation, and activities. We did not include flights. Check flight prices here

If you don’t want to dine out in Santanyi, shop for local produce from the market and have a picnic instead! After the market, you can head to one of the nearby beaches and enjoy your lunch in the sun — bliss.

What are the Santanyi Market times?

Santanyi is definitely one of the most famous markets on the island, and as it only takes place two mornings a week, it gets very busy. The market is open from 10 AM until 2 PM. For a stress-free experience (and easy parking), we recommend arriving before 9 AM. Although the vendors won’t be set up yet, it’s still nice to start the day slow with a morning coffee before launching into your shopping experience!

Like everywhere in Mallorca, the peak months of July and August are incredibly busy in Santanyi (on market days). If you plan on staying in Santanyi, the fall or spring months may offer a more tranquil experience, with milder temperatures that make shopping much more enjoyable. For example, we visited in mid-October and loved it!
