Rasiglia is a storybook stone village dating back to the Middle Ages and sits at the foot of the beautiful Appenine Mountains. This hidden gem, surrounded by lush green woodland, is most famous for the small rivers, canals, and waterfalls that weave through the town, carrying crystal-clear water through the mossy mountain banks. This was because of the Via della Spina, a road that once connected the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic coasts. While Rasiglia’s population now only has a mere 40 inhabitants, the village is a testament to its glorious past. Restored waterways and mills, some transformed into museums, remind visitors of the important role the village played back in history. Things to do in Rasiglia, Italy 

Perched over 600 meters above sea level, Rasiglia offers an exciting off-road journey into the heart of Umbria – a timeless place brimming with mystery. Though small, there are a few things you can do in town. 

1. Stroll the Medieval Streets

While you walk between the stone buildings, admiring the adjoining streams of water, soak up the quiet and peaceful atmosphere of the town. Here and there, on the sides of the buildings, you’ll spot old photographs and paintings showcasing what life used to look like. Meander through a network of small canals, narrow stone streets, and idyllic houses, where every new corner adds to the village’s beauty.

2. Powermills & Waterways of Rasiglia

One of the highlights of Rasiglia is undoubtedly its unique water system. Nourished by the Menotre River, the streams of green-blue water flow like a spider’s web through the town, making it almost seem like the village is floating on water. From torrents, pools, small dams, and waterfalls, they all add to the unique and idyllic scenery of Rasiglia, Italy. 

The numerous small canals and waterfalls were historically used to power the mills, wool factories, and washhouses. The most significant is the old stone mill, which was used for the production and milling of flour and wheat. You can visit its interior, where old milling and grinding tools stand preserved. Near the mill, there’s also the former wool mill, which now houses different exhibitions and events. Inside, you’ll be able to look out over the water basin Pescaia. 

3. Visit the Sanctuary

Just 1 kilometer south of the village of Rasiglia lies the Sanctuary of Madonna delle Grazie (Our Lady of Grace). Built in the 15th century, it stands along the Fosso Terminara. This is one of the branches of the Menotre River that marks the border between Foligno and Spoleto.  

According to legend, the people of Rasiglia found the statue of the Lady in a small stream of water. The sanctuary resulted after, where you can now admire several frescoes and stone carvings. Most of these represent the healer, the protector of motherhood, and of pilgrims.

4. Join an Event

Throughout the year, Umbria sees many festivals and events that allow a glimpse into the region’s rich culture and traditions. From the Festa dei Borghi, a celebration of small Italian villages, to the Paese Presepe, which features beautiful traditional music, food, and crafts. 

If you’re visiting Italy during the winter months, the village of Rasiglia hosts a living nativity scene around Christmas. During this event, the villagers will welcome you dressed in the clothes of their trade, from carpenters, washerwomen, and blacksmiths to shoemakers, dyers, and so on.

How to Get to Rasiglia, Italy

Rasiglia is a tiny mountain village about a 40 minutes drive from Assisi, 50 from Perugia. Because of this, it makes the perfect stop on a day trip from either town while exploring Umbria’s luscious region. 

If you’re traveling by car, note that there’s no parking inside the tiny village. However, there’s plenty of room in the parking lots just along the main road. It’s possible to travel to Rasiglia, Italy, by public transport, but keep in mind that this may take a couple of hours. 

Getting Around

Rasiglia is best explored on foot due to its size. While you stroll through the narrow streets, admire the traditional stone houses, and learn about the history and culture by venturing into the historic mills. 

Best Time to Visit 

Since Rasiglia is very small, you can visit the entire village in just 1 hour. Because of its beauty, it’s very popular with local Italians who visit on the weekends, so we recommend visiting on the weekdays to see it at its most tranquil. 

The Umbria region experiences a Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and mild winters. The best time to visit Rasiglia, Italy, is during the spring (April to June) and fall (September to October) when the weather is nice, the landscape vibrant, and the crowds not too big.
